Description
Hi See for yourself the splendour of Wicklow with Darby O’Gill day tours from Dublin city centre. Experience an absorbing portrait of unparalleled beauty, the ruins & remains of an ancient city and a star of the small screen! Drink in the views and sense a feeling of discovery in the midst of the Wicklow Mountains.
The sights and sounds of the city left behind, mesmerising views come to the fore – dramatic mountains, rugged peaks, steep valleys and forest trails. Our first port of call is a lake called Lough Tay. Edged with a beach of glistening white sand in contrast to its dark peaty water has earned it the title of “The Guinness Lake” owing to its striking similarity to Ireland’s most famous export!
From here at your own pace you can meander and soak up the views of this vast walkers’ paradise, also renowned for its bird-watching and abundance of wildlife. Travelling further along the Wicklow Way, you’ll come to “the valley of two lakes”, the ancient monastic settlement of Glendalough. This famous site was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and the most iconic landmark, the round tower is over 1000 years old. Enter the visitor centre and find out more about this ancient city of learning, refuge and pilgrimage before exploring the fascinating ruins of its churches, graveyard and monastery for yourself. You may find time to follow the path to the Upper Lake and see the essence of this early Christian settlement set against the natural magnificence of the glacial carved valley.
Leaving the valley, we continue through the incredible Wicklow countryside to Mount Usher Gardens & Avoca Food Market.
One of only 3 Irish gardens with a top rating from the UK’s The Good Gardens Guide, Mount Usher is not simply one of Ireland’s greatest gardens, but it’s a world-class example of a “Robinsonian garden”, with its relaxed informality and natural layout. Monty Don has described it as one of his favourite gardens anywhere.
Ease away the stresses of life in these picturesque surroundings and take the weight off your feet while savouring delicious food in the Avoca Garden Café – where you’ll also find a sweet treat for the return trip to Dublin!
